White House Formally Bars CNN, MS NOW and Politico Journalists

The White House officially denied access to journalists from CNN, MS NOW, and Politico on Saturday, carrying out President Trump’s earlier announcement banning the three outlets from the building’s grounds. All three organizations confirmed their teams’ press passes were confiscated when journalists arrived at the White House that morning.

Trump also shared an AI-generated image on Truth social depicting the news outlets as trash bags placed outside the White House, posted shortly after the ban took effect.

News Organizations Vow Legal Pushback

CNN described the ban as an illegal attack on its constitutional right to report without government interference, while MS NOW said it plans to take all necessary steps to defend its First Amendment rights and protect independent journalism. Politico said it continues to stand behind its White House reporting team. All three outlets stated they intend to continue covering the administration despite the restriction.

Trump Signals More Outlets Could Follow

The ban follows a social media post in which Trump accused the outlets of publishing false reporting, adding that other news organizations could face similar action. When asked to clarify which outlets he meant, Trump pointed to two additional major publications as examples of what he considers biased coverage, though he stopped short of confirming any formal ban against them.

Part of a Broader Pattern

This isn’t the first time the administration has restricted media access. Trump previously barred a major wire service from his press pool over a naming dispute, a decision that outlet has since legally challenged. Similar credential disputes also arose during his first term, though courts ultimately intervened to restore access in some cases.
