Zcash Unveils New Cryptography Tool That Cuts Private Transaction Times Sharply

Developers behind Zcash have introduced a new cryptography toolkit designed to dramatically speed up private transactions. The upgrade, called Zakura Common, can reduce the time needed to generate a shielded transaction from more than three seconds to under 200 milliseconds in some cases, according to its creators.

Developers behind Zcash have introduced a new cryptography toolkit designed to dramatically speed up private transactions. The upgrade, called Zakura Common, can reduce the time needed to generate a shielded transaction from more than three seconds to under 200 milliseconds in some cases, according to its creators.

How the New Toolkit Works

Private Zcash transactions conceal the sender, receiver, and transaction amount, requiring wallets to perform heavy cryptographic calculations before a payment can be sent. This process has long been one of the slowest parts of using the network. The new toolkit reportedly makes mobile proof generation over 14 times faster and desktop performance more than five times faster, while hashing speeds improve by over 21 times.

Wallets and Nodes Set to Benefit

The upgrade does not require a network-wide update. Wallet developers can integrate the open-source libraries immediately, and Zakura’s own node software has already adopted the new stack. Full nodes are also expected to see faster transaction verification and improved syncing speeds.

Part of a Larger Scaling Push

The release builds on Zakura’s broader goal of supporting tens of thousands of private transactions per second, aiming to bring Zcash closer to the speed of major payment networks. Following the announcement.

$ZEC jumped about 5% to near $838 on the news.
