Zelenskiy Warns Wartime Election Would ‘Destroy’ Ukraine Amid Political Pressure

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has firmly rejected the idea of holding elections while fighting with Russia continues, warning it would split the nation and cause lasting damage. His remarks mark his first public response since former Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov openly called for a wartime vote last week, a demand that surprised many given it came from a senior political figure.

Fedorov’s Dismissal Sparked Political Tension

Fedorov, once seen as a strong potential rival to Zelenskiy, was removed from his post last month, triggering public protests. However, support for his return cooled once he pushed for elections, an idea widely opposed due to legal restrictions and safety concerns for millions of Ukrainians displaced, serving at the front, or living under occupation.

Public Opinion Leans Toward Waiting

Recent polling shows most Ukrainians prefer elections only after the war ends. Zelenskiy said his focus remains on ending the conflict while protecting Ukraine’s independence and unity.
