Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has acknowledged that the company made “mistakes” during its ongoing shift toward artificial intelligence-focused operations, according to an internal memo. He noted that rapid changes in AI development have created organizational challenges across the company.

Zuckerberg said Meta is investing heavily in AI, including hundreds of billions of dollars, as it reshapes its workforce and internal structure around new technology. He added that while changes are necessary, they have also created instability in some teams.

Workforce Restructuring and Role Changes

Earlier this year, Meta carried out a major restructuring that included laying off about 10% of its global workforce and shifting around 7,000 employees into AI-related roles. Zuckerberg said the company will continue to find new roles for affected employees instead of further large-scale layoffs this year.

He also noted that the company may continue to adjust its structure but will try to reduce disruption. Some employees reassigned to AI model training will be placed into newly created positions as part of the transition.

Focus on Stability and Collaboration

Zuckerberg said Meta plans to improve internal coordination by increasing investment in team building, including offsites and a large hackathon scheduled for July. The company is also reviewing management structures after concerns about overly wide reporting lines in new AI teams.

Despite the challenges, Meta continues to prioritize its Applied AI Engineering unit, which has a highly flat structure with a large number of individual contributors compared to managers.
