The agreement includes an immediate $5 billion injection, with up to $20 billion more tied to performance-based milestones.

This move builds on roughly $8 billion in prior funding, positioning Amazon as a long-term infrastructure partner for Anthropic. The AI firm’s valuation has surged to around $380 billion, highlighting the escalating costs of competing in the artificial intelligence sector, where computing power is becoming a critical resource.

AWS to Anchor $100B AI Infrastructure Commitment

Anthropic plans to spend more than $100 billion over the next decade on Amazon Web Services (AWS) infrastructure. This includes deployment of Trainium, Amazon’s custom-built AI chips designed to rival industry-leading accelerators.

The agreement also secures up to 5 gigawatts of compute capacity, supporting the training and deployment of Anthropic’s Claude models at hyperscale levels typically associated with national infrastructure.

AI Arms Race Intensifies Among Tech Giants

CEO Andy Jassy described the deal as a validation of AWS’s long term strategy to compete not only in cloud services but also in AI hardware. Amazon has already projected nearly $200 billion in capital expenditures this year, largely directed toward data centers and AI systems.

Anthropic previously named AWS as its primary cloud provider, while continuing partnerships with competitors like Microsoft and Google, underscoring the intensifying race among hyperscalers to dominate the AI economy.
