Analysts Say Binance Hack Exposes Exchange Risk, Not a Flaw in Bitcoin

TD Cowen analyst Lance Vitanza argues that the hack revealed weaknesses in Binance's security, not in the technology behind bitcoin or other cryptocurrencies. He compared it to everyday life, saying people do not stop using dollars when a bank is robbed, just as car theft does not invalidate the automobile. The attack appears to have targeted Binance's transaction signing infrastructure rather than the Bitcoin network itself. Vitanza believes the selloff could give investors a chance to add to bitcoin and to shares of companies that hold it on their balance sheets.

Can Binance Afford to Cover the Losses?

Compass Point analysts Ed Engel and Michael Donovan say Binance can probably make customers whole. They point to reported holdings that include $1.2 billion in excess USDT reserves, roughly $1.2 billion in bitcoin reserves and more than $1.5 billion in USDC treasury assets. In their words, the exchange has more than enough liquidity to cover the hole.

Fallout Still Ahead for Stablecoins and DeFi

The analysts warn the impact will not be painless. Compass Point expects pressure on stablecoin supply as Binance reimburses customers, and says withdrawals from decentralized lending platforms could pick up once markets reopen.

Winners From the Binance Hack

The breach could send business to rivals such as Coinbase and Bullish, as well as decentralized exchanges like Hyperliquid, where users trade without giving up custody of their assets.

Bitcoin Price Levels to Watch

Compass Point is watching the $75,000 to $77,000 range for bitcoin, and a break below it could put the recent rally at risk. As analyst El-Assal put it, this is painful, but it is not 2022.
