Andy Burnham to Host Zelenskiy as First Foreign Visitor Since Becoming UK Prime Minister

Britain’s new Prime Minister Andy Burnham will welcome Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy as his first international guest on Monday, a visit Downing Street says reflects London’s continued backing for Kyiv.

Naval Base Meeting Planned

The two leaders will meet at a naval base, where they will be briefed on how UK-led training programs are strengthening Ukraine’s armed forces and producing results on the battlefield, according to Downing Street. Burnham said in a statement that Britain stands with Ukraine “shoulder to shoulder” and that support “remains unwavering,” adding that Russia should have no doubt about the UK’s resolve.

Meeting Ukrainian Troops

During the visit, Burnham and Zelenskiy will meet more than 200 Ukrainian military personnel and sailors who spent the past three weeks in Britain participating in Exercise Sea Breeze, a maritime security and counter-mine training program designed to prepare them for future Black Sea missions.

UK’s Financial Commitment to Ukraine

Since Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022, Britain’s total support for Ukraine has reached £25 billion ($33.3 billion), including £16 billion in military assistance and £5.6 billion in non-military aid. Burnham’s predecessor, Keir Starmer, visited Kyiv shortly before stepping down this month, pledging €300 million ($345 million) toward equipping Ukraine with 16 Swedish-made Gripen fighter jets.
