Anthropic Builds Physical Lab as AI Company Expands Into Drug Research
Anthropic has quietly established a physical laboratory in the San Francisco Bay Area, marking a shift beyond purely computer-based biology work as the AI company deepens its push into drug science. The company has previously stated its goal of unlocking treatments for rare diseases, and this wet lab represents a move into hands-on experimentation.

The company’s head of life sciences confirmed the lab’s existence, describing the approach as typical of biotech companies that split work between internal facilities and external partners. However, a company spokesperson clarified the lab isn’t specifically for drug discovery, without offering further detail.
Robots and AI Working Together
Sources familiar with the effort say Anthropic wants its Claude AI system to eventually direct robotic units in carrying out lab experiments with minimal human involvement, while maintaining that human oversight remains essential for safety.
Balancing Growth With Safety Concerns
The lab expansion comes as Anthropic navigates competing pressures. Company researchers have recently raised concerns about AI risks, even as leadership pursues an IPO valued at roughly $2 trillion to fund further development.
Targeting Conditions Seen as “Undruggable”
The company believes AI could accelerate treatment development for previously untreatable conditions, including complex antibody therapies. Anthropic has stated it will not pursue clinical trials, positioning itself to avoid direct competition with pharmaceutical companies and instead focus on underserved research areas.
The company has also been ramping up hiring for lab operations and biochemical expertise, with life sciences now representing one of its largest investment areas by resources and staff. Anthropic has also partnered with major pharmaceutical companies while working to keep client data separate from its broader AI systems.
