Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei Earned $18 Million Last Year, Landing in the Middle of Big Tech Pay

Dario Amodei made $18 million last year as CEO of Anthropic, according to the company's IPO filing. That puts him in the middle ranks of top tech executives, above the CEOs of Alphabet and Amazon but behind those at Oracle and Nvidia. Most of his pay comes from stock and other awards rather than salary. He and his sister, Anthropic President Daniela Amodei, saw their annual salaries doubled in July to $1.4 million each. Daniela received a total of $16.4 million last year.

This year the board also granted both of them restricted stock units, with some tied to staying at the company and some tied to the IPO. CFO Krishna Rao earned $720,250. Anthropic is preparing for an IPO as early as this fall at a valuation that could top $2 trillion.

How Amodei’s Pay Compares With Other Tech CEOs

Equilar’s Courtney Yu said $18 million looks low for a $2 trillion company, though that may change once his full ownership stake is disclosed. With six other co-founders, Amodei could end up with a smaller share of IPO wealth than other major tech CEOs. S&P 500 CEO pay averaged $22.8 million last year, according to the AFL-CIO. At the top, Oracle co CEO Clayton Magouyrk earned $627.5 million, while Elon Musk was paid just $54,080 as SpaceX CEO before it listed. Alphabet’s Sundar Pichai made $10.9 million, including $8.8 million for security, and $213.9 million on an actually paid basis. Amazon’s Andrew Jassy made $2.1 million, or $13.2 million actually paid.

Anthropic Founders Pledge 80% of Equity to Charity

The Amodei siblings and their fellow co-founders pledged in the filing to give 80% of their personal Anthropic equity to charitable causes. A company spokesperson pointed to an essay by Dario Amodei arguing that wealthy people have an obligation to help address problems created by AI adoption.
