Anthropic Partners With Accenture as First Embedded AI Safety Evaluator

Anthropic has selected Accenture as its first embedded evaluator to help implement a proposal aimed at slowing the pace of AI development, following a plan published earlier this month by the company’s CEO. The proposal called for a three-step approach to allow safety safeguards to catch up with rapid AI progress, citing concerns about potential catastrophic risks tied to unchecked development.

The original proposal warned that AI systems are increasingly capable of building future generations of AI themselves, a dynamic described as recursive self-improvement, which could eventually outpace humanity’s ability to understand or control these systems if left unaddressed.

Industry Reaction Remains Mixed

Leaders at other major AI and tech companies responded positively to the slowdown proposal, though not everyone in the industry agreed, with at least one prominent tech executive arguing such regulation isn’t necessary.

Partnership Focuses on Independent Model Testing

The first step outlined in the original proposal involves bringing in independent evaluators with deep, embedded access to AI systems, a commitment Anthropic had already made unilaterally. The new partnership with Accenture and its AI-focused division will involve evaluating and stress testing AI models, conducting alignment assessments, and examining safety safeguards.

Both companies plan to invest at least $1 billion combined into the initiative over the next five years. Anthropic acknowledged that no established funding system currently exists for this kind of independent evaluation work, suggesting that long-term funding should eventually come from pooled industry or government sources. Given the urgency of the effort, however, Anthropic will fund Accenture’s work directly for now.

More Partnerships Expected Soon

The arrangement is non exclusive, and Anthropic said it plans to announce additional evaluator partnerships in the coming weeks. Accenture’s AI division has experience testing and evaluating models for several major AI labs and building safety-focused AI systems, with its CEO describing embedded evaluation as an emerging but increasingly important part of the broader AI safety landscape.
