Opus 5 Positioned As Cost-Effective Workhorse Model
Fable 5 remains Anthropic’s most capable publicly available model, built for lengthy autonomous tasks, while Mythos 5 is currently restricted to a limited group of organizations due to its advanced capabilities. Opus 5, by contrast, is being marketed as the practical choice for everyday knowledge work and automation, offering performance close to Fable 5 at roughly half the cost. Unlike Fable 5, Opus 5 does not retain user data for 30 days.
AI Race Intensifies Ahead Of Public Offerings
The release follows OpenAI’s recent GPT-5.6 rollout, while Google’s Gemini 3.5 Pro has reportedly faced delays, a claim Google has disputed. Anthropic filed confidential IPO paperwork in June, with OpenAI following soon after, though OpenAI’s listing may not arrive until 2027. Competition is also building from China’s Moonshot AI, which recently released its Kimi K3 model.
