Binance has refused to comment on a new report alleging that European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde intervened to block its crypto license application in Greece, while reaffirming its intention to seek authorization under the European Union’s crypto regulatory framework.
According to a report from The Wall Street Journal, a Greek regulatory official told Binance that Lagarde had personally asked the country’s prime minister not to approve the exchange’s application. The report also claims Greek authorities had informed EU securities regulators earlier this year that they intended to move forward with approval.
Binance Response Stays Vague
A Binance spokesperson told reporters the company would not comment on speculation, adding that it remains focused on operating long-term under the EU’s Markets in Crypto Assets framework, known as MiCA.
Timeline of a Troubled Application
Binance originally applied for a MiCA license in Greece back in January. By mid-year, reports suggested regulators were leaning toward rejecting the bid, followed by separate claims that Lagarde had already intervened in the process.
Binance ultimately withdrew its Greek application just before the July 1 regulatory deadline, stating it would pursue licensing in a different EU country instead.
What This Means for Binance in Europe
The situation highlights ongoing friction between major crypto exchanges and European regulators as the industry works to establish compliant operations across the bloc. Despite the setback, Binance has signaled it isn’t abandoning its European expansion plans, simply shifting its approach to securing regulatory approval elsewhere.
