How MiCA Reshaped European Crypto and Left Poland Struggling to Keep Up
As Europe's MiCA regulatory framework moves the crypto industry into a more mature phase, Poland has struggled to keep pace, according to an opinion piece by Morphic Financial Group founder Mateusz Kara. Despite having over 2,000 registered virtual asset service providers and a strong crypto ecosystem, political disagreements delayed Poland's ability to implement a functioning domestic licensing pathway under the new rules.

As Europe’s MiCA regulatory framework moves the crypto industry into a more mature phase, Poland has struggled to keep pace, according to an opinion piece by Morphic Financial Group founder Mateusz Kara. Despite having over 2,000 registered virtual asset service providers and a strong crypto ecosystem, political disagreements delayed Poland’s ability to implement a functioning domestic licensing pathway under the new rules.
Licensing Gap Leaves Poland Behind
Since July 1, businesses in Poland can no longer operate as crypto service providers without full MiCA authorization. While countries like Germany, France and the Netherlands issued dozens of licenses, Poland, along with Greece, Hungary and Romania, issued none. This gap has pushed many Polish crypto companies to relocate, taking talent, compliance expertise and an estimated €9.4 billion in investor assets with them.
Rising Costs Reshape the Industry
MiCA compliance now requires significant capital, with licensing costs reaching up to €700,000, making it harder for smaller companies to enter the market. While this is expected to strengthen the industry overall by removing weaker players, it also raises barriers for new entrants, potentially leaving Poland and other Eastern European nations struggling to rebuild their crypto ecosystems for years to come.
