The open governor contest follows term limited Governor Gavin Newsom, who is widely seen as preparing a possible 2028 presidential run. Under California’s “jungle primary” system, the top two vote-getters advance to the general election regardless of party, with 61 candidates competing.

Early polling shows Democrat and former US cabinet official Xavier Becerra leading the race, followed by Democratic billionaire Tom Steyer. On the Republican side, former Fox News host Steve Hilton, endorsed by President Donald Trump, remains a strong contender.

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass also faces multiple challengers amid voter concerns over homelessness, housing affordability, and recovery from the 2025 Palisades fire.

Congressional Maps Could Shift Power Balance

The election also serves as the first test of newly redrawn congressional districts that could affect the balance of power in the US House of Representatives. Democrats currently hold a strong advantage in California’s congressional delegation, but the updated maps could make several races more competitive.

Key battlegrounds include the Central Valley’s 22nd District, where Republican Representative David Valadao faces challenges from Democratic candidates Jasmeet Bains and Randy Villegas. Another closely watched seat is the 48th District, where redistricting has created an open contest after Republican Darrell Issa stepped aside.

Polls closed at 8 p.m. PDT, but final results in close races may take several days due to mail-in ballots.
