What Is the Chainlink Runtime Environment?

Unveiled in late October 2024, CRE functions as an execution layer on top of the Chainlink platform. It simplifies the deployment of smart contract infrastructure by removing the need to hard-code Chainlink-specific logic into onchain contracts.

CRE acts like an operating system for Chainlink’s decentralized oracle network, orchestrating workflows that pull together offchain data, crosschain messaging, APIs, and cryptographic proofs.

Developer Efficiency and Multi-Chain Capabilities

Nazarov emphasized that building smart contracts with CRE drastically cuts development time. What previously took months can now be achieved in weeks or even days. Developers can use familiar languages like JavaScript, TypeScript, or Go, while the decentralized oracle network (DON) handles all backend interactions—reading chains, fetching APIs, reaching consensus, and writing onchain.

This design allows developers to build cross-chain workflows, including compliance checks and zero-knowledge proofs, without being tied to a single network.

CRE Bridges Legacy Finance and Blockchain

More than a developer tool, CRE is emerging as a key bridge between traditional financial systems and blockchain networks. It supports confidential computing and is already being used in institutional use cases, including a notable test between Chainlink, JPMorgan’s Kinexys, and Ondo Finance. The test successfully completed a cross-chain delivery versus payment (DvP) settlement between a permissioned payment system and a public testnet.

The infrastructure enables large institutions to securely connect existing systems with onchain assets, paving the way for real-world blockchain integrations.

A New Standard for Smart Contract Architecture

With native multi-chain support, zero-knowledge capabilities, and the ability to interface with real-world finance, CRE positions Chainlink as a key infrastructure provider in the next wave of blockchain innovation. As institutions explore onchain operations, tools like the Chainlink Runtime Environment may become central to bridging Web2 and Web3.
