China has finished the first phase of building a man-made island on Antelope Reef in the disputed Paracels archipelago in the South China Sea. Satellite images reviewed show the reclaimed landmass for the first time, with construction equipment having departed after at least six months of work in the contested waterway.
Strategic Location Near Taiwan
Analysts say the island’s location makes it particularly significant in any future Taiwan conflict scenario, positioning it as a key part of what could become China’s largest military base in the region. Images from July show construction beginning in the island’s southeast corner, including what appears to be a helicopter pad. China has not confirmed a military purpose, with state media instead citing civilian uses like weather forecasting and scientific research.
Signs Point to Military Buildup
The reclaimed island stretches nearly 6 kilometers long, with a straight coastline analysts believe could become a runway. A study from the Center for Strategic and International Studies noted that initial excavation for a runway appears to have already begun. A 680-meter wharf and deep-water harbor were also observed, with a coast guard vessel spotted alongside it.
Regional Implications and Historical Context
Security experts say Antelope Reef could become one of China’s most strategically important sites in the South China Sea, potentially housing bombers and submarine-support infrastructure closer to the mainland. China has controlled the Paracels since 1974, and Vietnam continues to formally dispute the territory, having previously objected to construction at Antelope Reef.
