Coinbase Launches AI Agent Accounts for Automated Trading, Payments and Portfolio Management

Coinbase has introduced Coinbase for Agents, a new system that allows users to create dedicated accounts and sub-accounts for AI agents. The platform enables AI bots to trade, manage funds, conduct research and make payments on behalf of users without requiring separate wallet funding.

Users can give instructions through natural language prompts, allowing agents to perform recurring tasks such as portfolio rebalancing, monitoring market trends and executing investment strategies automatically. The system can also allocate small amounts of capital for opportunities that fit predefined investment rules.

AI Agents Gain Trading and Payment Capabilities

A key feature of Coinbase for Agents is support for x402, an open AI payments standard that enables machine-to-machine transactions. AI agents can use it to pay for premium APIs, data services, computing resources and paywalled content through micropayments.

According to Coinbase, more than 10,000 merchants have already integrated x402, helping expand real-world use cases for agent-driven commerce and digital payments.

Safety Controls and Future Expansion

The platform includes security measures such as isolated agent sandboxes, spending limits, withdrawal controls and transaction restrictions. Coinbase plans to expand agent access beyond spot trading to include equities, prediction markets and additional products, while keeping users in control through customizable safety rules.
