Coinbase’s head of platform, Rob Witoff, says artificial intelligence now helps write more than 95% of the crypto exchange’s code, a figure that has more than doubled since February and comes months after the company cut 700 jobs.

AI Adoption Accelerates Across Teams

Witoff told that nearly all Coinbase employees use AI daily, with code written by or with large language models now sitting between 95% and 100%, up sharply from the 40% the company reported in February. He said reliance on AI varies by task: core cryptography work still depends heavily on human cryptographers reviewing code line by line, while internal prototyping is now effectively fully automated, with core systems falling somewhere in between.

Smaller Teams, More AI Agents

The shift has let Coinbase restructure into smaller, more senior teams, with two or three employees now handling work that once required ten or more. Witoff said May’s layoffs hit junior development roles hardest but also touched marketing, legal, support and compliance. Most engineers now run five to ten AI agents at once, with agents collectively doing coding work equivalent to about 1,200 employees, a number Witoff expects could reach 100,000 by 2030.

Coinbase joins several crypto firms citing AI efficiencies behind recent layoffs, including Crypto.com, Block, Kraken, Gemini, Messari and Dune. Block CEO Jack Dorsey previously said AI tools paired with smaller teams are reshaping how companies operate.
