Crypto entrepreneur and F2Pool founder Chun Wang has joined SpaceX’s first planned human mission to Mars after purchasing a place on the ambitious interplanetary journey.

The mission, announced by SpaceX, is expected to last around two years and will travel beyond the Moon, fly past Mars, and eventually return to Earth. Wang has also secured a seat on a separate commercial mission around the Moon, expected to take place before the Mars trip.

Wang said he decided to support the Mars mission because he fears human exploration of the planet could be delayed for generations without private backing. He argued that while governments are likely to establish lunar bases due to growing competition between major powers, Mars exploration may struggle to move forward at the same pace.

Why Chun Wang Chose Mars Exploration

Wang said he wants to help ensure Mars remains a priority and hopes the mission can show people that the planet is more than a distant object in the sky.

He said the goal is to prove humans can travel to Mars and safely return.

SpaceX’s Long-Term Mars Vision

SpaceX aims to build a self sustaining city on Mars and expects cargo missions to begin no earlier than 2028. The company estimates that millions of tons of equipment and more than one million people may eventually be needed to establish a permanent settlement.

Wang previously funded and led another SpaceX mission, Fram2, which flew over Earth’s poles and conducted scientific experiments in space.
