Democrats Sweep Congress in Historic Midterms, Flipping Red States From Texas to Kansas

Democrats have taken control of both chambers of Congress, and several of the outcomes would have sounded far-fetched a few months ago. The party picked up six Senate seats and 15 House seats, its biggest net Senate gain since 2008. Voters handed seats to Democrats in states Donald Trump won comfortably in 2024, including Texas, Kansas, South Carolina and Iowa. Senate flips also came in Ohio and North Carolina, where Sherrod Brown completed his comeback.

Historic Senate Wins in Texas, Kansas and Michigan

In Kansas, Adam Hamilton beat Republican Roger Marshall and became the state’s first Democratic senator in 94 years. Texas picked James Talarico over Trump backed Ken Paxton, the first Democratic Senate win there since 1988. In Michigan, Abdul El-Sayed won his race and will be the first Muslim elected to the US Senate.

Governor Races Reshape Texas and California

The shift reached the governor’s mansions as well. Gina Hinojosa defeated Republican Greg Abbott, ending more than 30 years without a Democratic governor in Texas and becoming its first Latina governor. Democrats also swept all five major statewide contests in Texas for the first time in decades. In California, Xavier Becerra beat Steve Hilton to become the state’s first Latino governor since 1875.

Why Voters Turned Against Republicans

Cost of living was the top concern for voters. High fuel prices, the war with Iran and wider frustration over the economy shaped how many people voted, helping drive one of the largest political shifts in recent American history.
