Midterm Results: Senate and House Seats Flipped

In the Senate, Democrats hold at least 54 seats to 44, and could reach 56 if Alaska and Mississippi go their way. They also picked up at least 30 House seats. Texas elected its first Democratic senator since 1988 and removed Governor Greg Abbott. Kansas chose its first Democratic senator in nearly a century, and South Carolina rejected Trump’s chosen candidate. Abdul El-Sayed won Michigan and became the first Muslim senator. Republicans lost ground in 99% of counties counted so far.

Trump and Republican Leaders React

Trump toured the White House ballroom project the next morning and said he expects to work with Democrats unless they turn destructive, adding that he has the veto. JD Vance blamed the war. Speaker Mike Johnson will not lead House Republicans next year, and Ron DeSantis described the outcome as close to an extinction level event for the party.

What Democrats Plan Next

Hakeem Jeffries promised an end to the House acting as an arm of the administration. Democrats are expected to open investigations and block nominees, including any Supreme Court pick. Republicans still control the lame duck session and a December funding bill.
