Deutsche Bank Fined $1.3 Million Over Australian Derivatives Reporting Errors

Deutsche Bank has paid a A$2 million penalty, around $1.3 million, after Australia's securities regulator found the bank had misreported more than 260,000 over-the-counter derivative transactions. The Australian Securities and Investments Commission said the errors involved incorrect "direction" data across foreign exchange and commodities trades carried out between October 2024 and August 2025.

Deutsche Bank has paid a A$2 million penalty, around $1.3 million, after Australia’s securities regulator found the bank had misreported more than 260,000 over-the-counter derivative transactions. The Australian Securities and Investments Commission said the errors involved incorrect “direction” data across foreign exchange and commodities trades carried out between October 2024 and August 2025.

What Went Wrong

ASIC said the bank failed to accurately record which side of a trade it was on for hundreds of thousands of transactions. The regulator described the issue as systemic, pointing to weaknesses in Deutsche Bank’s internal reporting systems rather than a one-off error.

Bank’s Response

Deutsche Bank cooperated with the investigation and is now putting measures in place to prevent similar reporting problems going forward, according to ASIC.

The penalty adds to a string of regulatory actions against global banks over derivatives reporting accuracy, an area regulators have increasingly scrutinized since the aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis.
