The European Central Bank is preparing to put a small share of its own funds into tokenized public sector securities, marking a direct step into blockchain based finance.
Trades To Settle Through New Pontes System
The purchases will be settled in central bank money using Pontes, the Eurosystem’s newly launched settlement system for transactions built on distributed ledger technology, which went live on Monday. The ECB said the move will give it hands-on experience across the entire investment process, covering trade execution, settlement, system operations, and portfolio management.

Funding Comes From Non-Monetary Policy Portfolio
The investments will be drawn from a non-monetary-policy portfolio that the central bank uses to generate income covering its operating costs. Initial purchases will focus on euro-denominated securities issued by central and regional governments within the euro area, along with public agencies and European supranational institutions. The ECB’s Executive Board will decide on timing and further operational details once preparatory work is complete.
Pontes Aims To Bridge DLT And Central Bank Infrastructure
The European Stability Mechanism said Pontes is designed to connect emerging blockchain platforms with existing central bank systems, helping keep central bank money at the core of settlement as financial markets increasingly shift toward tokenization.
