Election Officials Nationwide Prepare For Possible Federal Disruption Ahead Of Midterms

State and local election officials across the country are taking new precautions ahead of November’s midterms, citing concerns that federal actions could interfere with voting rather than just outside threats like cyberattacks or misinformation.

Officials Brace For Federal Intervention

According to interviews with more than 50 election officials from both parties, many are preparing for scenarios including federal agents appearing at polling places, demands for access to voting equipment, and investigations into local election offices. Officials in states like Michigan, Wisconsin and California have consulted attorneys, run legal training sessions, and rehearsed responses to potential subpoenas or equipment seizures. These preparations follow earlier incidents, including a federal raid on election records in Georgia’s Fulton County and a contested ballot seizure in California, both of which remain in legal disputes.

Administration Pushes Back On Concerns

The White House has dismissed these worries, saying its actions are meant to enforce election law and address alleged noncitizen voting, though independent research and a prior investigation found such voting to be extremely rare.

The administration has also pursued redistricting changes and a mail voting proposal that the Supreme Court recently blocked from taking effect before the election. Officials say the combination of legal battles, misinformation campaigns and physical security threats has pushed many election offices to add measures like bulletproof glass, panic buttons and armed security, particularly after past incidents of threats against election workers.
