Ethereum Developers Begin Narrowing Down Proposals for Hegotá Upgrade

Ethereum developers are working through 66 proposals as they begin scoping the network’s next major upgrade, known as Hegotá. A significant portion of these proposals focus on bringing stronger native privacy capabilities directly into the protocol, rather than relying on third-party solutions.

Key Proposals in the Spotlight

Currently, FOCIL, short for Fork choice enforced inclusion lists, is the only proposal officially scheduled for inclusion in the upgrade. This mechanism would allow a committee of validators to force pending transactions into blocks, aimed at strengthening the network’s resistance to censorship.

According to Ethereum Foundation contributor Toni Wahrstätter, three additional proposals should also be included to unlock native privacy features for applications built on Ethereum. These include Frame Transactions, Keyed Nonces, and Recent Roots for Frame Transactions. Together, these proposals are intended to give privacy-focused applications the tools they need to function without depending on intermediaries.

Timeline and Next Steps

Core developers are aiming to ship the Hegotá upgrade sometime next year, with upcoming developer calls expected to play a major role in shaping Ethereum’s overall development path for 2027. Any proposals that don’t make the final cut for Hegotá could still be revisited and considered for a future upgrade down the line. The next Ethereum developer call is scheduled for Monday at 2:00 p.m. UTC, where further discussion on these proposals is expected.

Glamsterdam Upgrade Still Comes First

Before Hegotá arrives, Ethereum developers are focused on finalizing and shipping Glamsterdam, considered one of the most significant upgrades planned for this year. Glamsterdam is designed to improve network scalability, strengthen the security of Ethereum’s base layer, and make the overall network easier to use. Its mainnet launch is expected sometime in the second half of 2026, according to Ethereum’s publicly available roadmap.
