The Ethereum Foundation is facing renewed scrutiny after co-executive director Hsiao Wei Wang announced she is stepping down from her leadership role. Wang will return to a research-focused position, marking another high-level change inside the Switzerland-based nonprofit that supports Ethereum’s development and ecosystem growth.
Her exit comes during a broader wave of departures, with at least eight senior members leaving the organization over the past five months. The trend has triggered fresh debate within the Ethereum community about governance, leadership stability, and long-term direction.
CROPS Framework and Internal Tensions
The Foundation recently introduced a strategic framework called “CROPS,” which stands for cypherpunk values, resilience, open-source development, permissionlessness, and security. Supporters see it as a reinforcement of Ethereum’s original principles, while critics argue it does not address deeper issues in execution and management.
Former Ethereum researcher Dankrad Feist suggested the departures reflect leadership problems rather than disagreements over strategy. He noted that many departing members support the CROPS vision but remain concerned about internal management.

Community Split Over Ethereum’s Future Direction
Opinions across the ecosystem remain divided. Some developers and observers believe the exits show structural weakness, while others argue they reflect a shift toward decentralization, where more responsibility moves beyond the Foundation into broader developer groups and independent organizations.

Despite concerns, many community members continue to emphasize that Ethereum itself remains stable, even as questions about leadership and coordination persist within the Foundation.
