Ethereum Institutional Backs Push to Speed Up Network Block Times

Ethereum Institutional has thrown its support behind a proposal from Ethlabs aimed at reducing Ethereum's block times, citing growing institutional activity moving onto the network as a key reason for the change. The organization argued that speeding up the network has become necessary as competition from other blockchains intensifies.

DeFi Founders Rally Behind Proposal

The backing follows an article published by Ethlabs earlier in the week, featuring support from roughly twenty decentralized finance founders for a proposal known as “Quick Slots.” The plan seeks to initially cut Ethereum’s block time from 12 seconds down to 10 seconds.

Broader Industry Trend Toward Faster Networks

Ethereum isn’t alone in pursuing faster block confirmation times. Earlier this week, the majority of Zcash token holders voted in favor of cutting that network’s block time significantly, while Solana has already been reducing its own slot times in stages throughout the year as part of a broader effort to improve blockchain latency and speed.

Path Toward Implementation

The proposal was originally introduced earlier this year and was suggested for inclusion in Ethereum’s upcoming Hegotá upgrade during a developer meeting in August. Ethlabs said it is currently working to merge the proposal into the network’s core codebase while reviewing potential technical dependencies.

Developers may begin implementing the Hegotá upgrade later this year, following the completion of Glamsterdam, which is considered one of the most significant Ethereum upgrades planned for the year, focused on improving scalability and network resilience.
