Developers are now targeting October 6 for the upgrade’s rollout on the Sepolia public test network, pending formal confirmation.

Performance Results Show Strong Processing Speeds

Nethermind, one of the software clients used to run Ethereum nodes, completed a rigorous performance test this week covering one of Glamsterdam’s most significant changes. The system processed 570.7 billion gas in just over three minutes, averaging roughly 2.9 billion gas per second across 2,302 individual tests. The evaluation focused specifically on block-level access lists, a feature that allows computers to identify which accounts and data a block will require before processing begins, enabling faster parallel checks instead of sequential ones.

Block Capacity Nearly Triples in Testing

During the rehearsal, Glamsterdam raised the network’s block gas limit from 60 million to 200 million shortly after launch. Since gas represents the computing effort required for transactions, this expanded ceiling means each block can support significantly more payments, token swaps, and general activity.

What This Means for Ethereum’s Future

A higher gas limit could reduce fee spikes during periods of heavy trading or popular token launches, since the network would be able to absorb more transactions before users compete aggressively for space. However, larger blocks also present challenges, particularly for smaller node operators who may struggle to keep pace.

To address this, Glamsterdam extends the time allowed for block data to spread across the network from two seconds to nine seconds, giving validators more time to verify larger blocks. The upgrade also aims to bring transaction building processes more directly under Ethereum’s own protocol rules, reducing reliance on external relay services. Developers stress that the 200 million limit remains a test parameter for now, not a confirmed setting for Ethereum’s main network.
