EU Announces Fresh Investment Package for Greenland Amid US Annexation Push

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is set to reveal an increase in EU investment and stronger political ties with Greenland, a Danish Arctic territory that U.S. President Donald Trump has repeatedly claimed should belong to the United States. Her two-day visit to the region signals backing for Denmark and Greenland, both of which have firmly rejected Trump’s annexation demands.

Investment to Target Minerals, Energy, and Satellites

Von der Leyen indicated the funding package would cover critical minerals, renewable energy, and satellite communications, describing the amount as substantial without disclosing specifics. Greenland’s premier, Jens Frederik Nielsen, welcomed the move, pointing to the territory’s longstanding partnership with the EU. Officials say the package marks not just a funding increase but an expansion into new sectors beyond the EU’s traditional support for fishing rights and education.

Arctic Tensions Continue Simmering

The visit comes amid growing global interest in the Arctic as melting ice opens shipping routes and access to mineral resources, drawing attention from the U.S., Russia, China, and Europe. Trump’s push to control Greenland earlier this year strained NATO unity, with European officials maintaining that Greenland already falls under the alliance’s mutual defense pact. Talks between Washington, Copenhagen, and Nuuk, agreed upon in January, have yet to produce a resolution, and Trump reiterated his stance at a NATO summit in July.

Though Greenland exited the EU in 1985, its residents retain EU citizenship as Danish nationals, keeping the territory connected to the bloc despite its formal departure.
