A powerful heatwave across Europe has left at least 18 people dead in France, including two young children who were found unconscious inside a hot car. Authorities say the extreme temperatures have pushed emergency services to their limits as cities experience some of their hottest June readings in history.

Bordeaux recorded 41.9°C, breaking a record set only last year, while Poitiers reached 41.2°C, surpassing a high that had stood since 1947. Paris also came close to its hottest June day on record, with temperatures reaching around 38.4°C, according to preliminary meteorological data.

Officials reported additional deaths among elderly residents in the Bordeaux region, with victims aged between 80 and 95 suffering heat-related medical complications.

Europe Faces Widespread Climate Strain and Infrastructure Pressure

The heatwave has also affected neighboring countries, with Spain’s northern regions nearing 40°C, far above seasonal norms. In Italy, authorities issued red alerts for 12 cities as soaring temperatures strained electricity systems, particularly in Turin, where utility operators added backup generators and increased staffing to manage outages.

Experts describe the weather pattern as an Omega block, trapping hot air from North Africa over Europe with little wind relief.

Heatwave Impacts Wildlife, Transport, and Public Safety

Emergency warnings have been issued across multiple countries as drowning incidents and heat-related illnesses increase. France alone reported 13 drowning deaths in a short period as people attempted to cool off in unsafe conditions.

In Belgium, wildlife rescue centers have taken in around 150 heat-stressed animals, including birds affected by overheated nesting sites that can reach up to 60°C. Officials continue to urge the public to stay hydrated, avoid direct sun exposure, and use only supervised swimming areas as the heatwave is expected to persist.
