Europe’s Government Debt Stress Is Now Raising the Price of Corporate Borrowing

Goldman Sachs says worries about government debt in Europe are filtering into what companies pay to borrow. French 10 year yields went above 5% on October 21, a level not seen since 2002, and the gap versus German Bunds hit more than 177 basis points the next day. Since early September, investment grade yields in Europe have gained about 30 basis points to 4.4%, while high yield costs have jumped roughly 90 basis points to 7%.

Why Hyperscaler Bond Sales Add Pressure

Big US technology firms are also competing for the same pool of money. Goldman expects hyperscaler debt sales to rise from $250 billion this year to $420 billion in 2027 as per CNBC, and global AI project finance could double to $300 billion.

Which European Companies Are Most Exposed

Interest expense among Stoxx 600 firms has moved from 1.25% to 1.85% of sales since 2022, trimming earnings by more than 5%. Around a quarter of their debt needs refinancing within two years and another quarter is floating rate, so roughly half could feel higher rates fairly fast. Businesses with weak cash flow, little pricing power or near term maturities face the most strain. Some managers may put debt reduction ahead of investment or shareholder payouts.

Outlook for Credit and Earnings

Goldman does not expect a systemic credit event, pointing to easing commodity prices, cooling inflation and better growth in 2027. It still sees borrowing costs as a growing constraint, with European earnings growth slowing below 10% next year from about 20%, and US growth falling below 15% from over 30%.
