Ex FTX COO Constance Wang Slams Netflix’s “The Altruists” Trailer as Inaccurate

Netflix’s full trailer for “The Altruists,” a series inspired by the FTX collapse, has drawn sharp criticism from former FTX executive Constance Wang. In a Friday post on X, she said watching it made her physically throw up. Wang joined FTX as COO in early 2019 and became co-CEO in its final months, staying until the exchange fell in November 2022. She says the company shown on screen looks nothing like the one she worked at.

What Wang Says FTX Was Really Like

Wang said she was the last person out of the Bahamas after Sam Bankman Fried was extradited, and that she lost everything she had on the platform. She has no interest in defending those responsible, but rejects the idea that FTX fell because staff were partying. According to her, the company had fewer than 200 employees, many working 16 to 18 hour days with barely any sleep.

Caroline Ellison and SBF Portrayal Criticized

The trailer leans heavily on the romance between Fried and Caroline Ellison, with Anthony Boyle and Julia Garner in the lead roles. Wang said Ellison was quiet, mild and often lost in thought, never aggressive. Most staff learned the two were dating only after the bankruptcy, she added.

The eight-episode limited series arrives Nov. 19. Bankman-Fried was convicted on seven counts in November 2023 and sentenced to 25 years, while Ellison received two years in September 2024 after cooperating. Wang now runs trading platform Pacifica, which she co-founded in 2025.
