Fed Rate Hike Looks Near-Certain, but Market Reaction May Be Limited
The Federal Reserve appears increasingly likely to raise interest rates next week following a stronger-than-expected core inflation reading released Friday. Core CPI rose 0.3% in August, exceeding economist forecasts of 0.2%, while headline inflation matched expectations at 3.4% annually. The data followed hotter producer price figures earlier in the week and came just a day after the European Central Bank raised its own rates.

Financial analysts noted the inflation figures make it increasingly difficult for policymakers to justify holding rates steady. Despite this, bitcoin rose following the report, trading higher over the past 24 hours.
Markets May Already Be Pricing In the Hike
Market strategists suggest traders had largely anticipated a rate increase even before Friday’s data, meaning the actual announcement next week could produce a relatively muted market reaction. Some analysts argue a bigger market move could occur if the Fed unexpectedly chooses not to raise rates, given how strongly a hike is already priced into current expectations.
Crypto researchers pointed out that bitcoin has historically gained in the weeks following hotter-than-expected inflation readings, with similar strength also seen recently in ether and solana. Some analysts attribute this resilience to broader concerns about inflation credibility and rising Treasury yields, suggesting that bitcoin and gold may be trading as inflation hedges rather than simply reacting to interest rate changes. Rising yields across the bond market, even amid expanded government bond buybacks, have added to investor unease about long term economic stability.
