Floods and Landslides Kill 56 in India, 14 in Nepal as Rivers Surge Past Danger Levels

Heavy rain and storms across India and Nepal have triggered floods and landslides that killed 56 people in India, while Nepal reported 14 deaths with 11 others still missing. India’s Uttar Pradesh state recorded rainfall nearly nine times above normal levels over 48 hours, according to the state’s relief commissioner. Beyond the fatalities, 46 people were injured and more than 1,000 houses sustained damage across affected areas.

Nepal Faces Widespread Flash Flood Risk

Nepali authorities warned that flash floods remain possible in 49 of the country’s 77 districts, with more than half facing high flood risk as water levels continue rising in major rivers. Power supply has been completely disrupted across several districts, while flooding damaged a hydropower project’s structure and transmission towers. Communication networks also suffered damage after floods affected optical fiber lines and power infrastructure.

Rivers Rise Above Danger Levels in India

India’s Central Water Commission identified a severe situation at 30 river monitoring stations across seven states, with major rivers including the Ganga, Kosi and Narmada exceeding danger thresholds. In a separate incident, an avalanche buried a base camp near Himlung Himal in northern Nepal, leaving 10 local workers missing while they prepared campsites for climbers who had not yet arrived.
