Suspects Face Decades in Prison
One suspect allegedly used a prior business relationship with a victim to gain access to the home, according to Mexico’s security secretary. If convicted, both suspects could face between 25 and 70 years in prison for each victim.
Part of a Rising Trend in Crypto-Related Violence
The case adds to a growing pattern of physical attacks aimed at forcing crypto holders to surrender assets. Blockchain security researchers recorded 52 such incidents globally in the first half of 2026, up significantly from the same period a year earlier, with losses from these attacks exceeding $30 million during that stretch. Similar cases have occurred internationally, including a kidnapping and killing linked to crypto wallet access in Russia last year.
