French authorities evacuated 525 residents on Friday after a wildfire broke out in the pine forests of the southwestern Landes region, close to an area already hit hard by major fires this summer. The blaze, which started Thursday, had burned through 1,100 hectares and come within 2 kilometers of the village of Luglon, according to regional official Gilles Clavreul.
Firefighters Battle Difficult Conditions
Clavreul described the situation as unfavorable, with around 500 firefighters working to control the flames alongside six aircraft brought in to assist. Police evacuated residents from the village, and road links to the north and south have been closed off.
Part of an Unprecedented Fire Season
Luglon sits roughly 100 kilometers southeast of Arcachon Bay, a popular tourist destination where two major wildfires scorched more than 50,000 hectares in late July and forced the evacuation of up to 220,000 people.
The region has faced repeated heatwaves this summer, with temperatures expected to reach 36 degrees Celsius on Friday afternoon. The total area burned so far this year has already surpassed the previous record set in 2022, as the Landes region’s dense pine forests remain highly flammable under dry conditions.
