GOP Senators Back Blanche’s Confirmation After He Withdraws Controversial Fund

Republican Senators John Cornyn of Texas and Thom Tillis of North Carolina announced Monday they will support Todd Blanche’s nomination for U.S. attorney general, resolving a standoff that had stalled his confirmation for weeks. The agreement follows Blanche’s decision to rescind a controversial 1.8 billion dollar fund that critics described as benefiting allies of President Trump.

Senators Had Sought Written Assurances

Cornyn and Tillis had blocked movement on Blanche’s nomination while demanding written confirmation that the Justice Department would abandon the fund, which was created as part of a legal settlement tied to a lawsuit Trump filed against the IRS over his tax records. Supporters argued the fund would compensate individuals unfairly targeted by federal agencies, while critics warned it could direct taxpayer money to Trump allies, including some involved in the January 6 Capitol riot.

Tax Audit Order Also Narrowed

The senators had additionally raised concerns about a related order shielding Trump, his family and his businesses from IRS audits on tax filings before a certain date. Blanche agreed to clarify that the protection applies only to Trump, his sons and the family business, and only retroactively, ensuring future tax returns remain subject to review.

Confirmation Process Moves Forward

With the two senators now on board, the Senate Judiciary Committee is expected to advance Blanche’s nomination Tuesday, with a full Senate vote possible as early as this weekend. Blanche has served as acting attorney general since April, when Trump removed his predecessor, Pam Bondi.
