Hantavirus Cases Rise After MV Hondius Cruise Outbreak Kills Three

The World Health Organization has confirmed 10 hantavirus cases connected to the deadly outbreak aboard the MV Hondius cruise ship, including three deaths. Health officials said eight infections were laboratory confirmed as Andes virus cases, while two remain classified as probable infections.

WHO officials revised the total from 11 to 10 after additional testing in the United States confirmed one previously suspected patient tested negative.

In the United States, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said 41 people are currently being monitored. The group includes passengers repatriated to medical facilities in Nebraska and Georgia, travelers who left the ship before the outbreak was identified, and individuals potentially exposed during flights involving symptomatic passengers.

Canada Reports Presumptive Positive Andes Virus Case

Canadian health officials also reported that one passenger in British Columbia tested presumptive positive for Andes hantavirus after self-isolating under medical supervision. The patient and their spouse, who is also showing mild symptoms, remain in hospital isolation.

Authorities said strict infection control procedures are being followed, including protective equipment for healthcare workers and repatriation teams.

Public health agencies in Canada and the United States continue monitoring the situation closely. Officials currently say the overall risk to the general public remains low, although monitoring and precautionary measures remain active due to the severity of the virus.
