House Narrowly Passes $1.15 Trillion Defense Bill Amid Iran War Objections

The US House of Representatives passed its version of the fiscal 2027 National Defense Authorization Act on Wednesday by a narrow 216 to 212 vote, despite Democratic concerns over spending levels, the ongoing Iran war and expanded Israel cooperation.

Vote Splits Sharply Along Party Lines

Nearly all Republicans backed the bill, while almost all Democrats opposed it. Democrats objected to the massive $1.15 trillion price tag at a time when social program spending is being cut, as well as the continued war with Iran, which the Pentagon estimates has cost $37.5 billion so far. Republicans defended the spending as necessary to support ongoing military operations, fund equipment purchases and provide troop benefits, including pay raises up to 7%.

Israel Provision Draws Additional Pushback

A measure expanding military technology cooperation with Israel also faced criticism from Democrats amid broader concerns over the toll of the conflict in Gaza.

Bill Faces Uncertain Path Forward

The NDAA has passed for 65 consecutive years, but this year’s version confronts unusual hurdles, including its attachment to the Trump-backed SAVE America Act, a voting restrictions measure unlikely to gain Senate support. Senate Democrats already blocked their chamber’s version of the bill last week. The House and Senate must still negotiate a compromise version before it can go to the president for signature or veto.
