Fighting is intensifying in Yemen as Houthi forces advance toward strategic mountain positions, following a report that President Donald Trump called off planned US airstrikes against the group at the last minute.

Advance Threatens Key Coastal Corridor

Houthi fighters are attempting to seize control of highland areas separating Yemen’s Red Sea coast from government-held territory in the south, aiming to secure gains made during a rapid advance earlier this month. The push comes despite hundreds of Saudi airstrikes targeting Houthi positions, which have so far failed to slow the group’s momentum as government-backed forces continue to retreat. According to the United Nations, the escalation has killed nearly 700 people and displaced well over 100,000 residents.

US Strikes Reportedly Called Off

A report indicated that the Trump administration had prepared to launch airstrikes against the Houthis after renewed requests from Saudi leadership, but that the plan was cancelled shortly before execution. Washington has so far avoided direct involvement in the conflict, wary of expanding an already unpopular regional war. The Houthis said over the weekend that they had targeted the Saudi capital for the first time since the fighting escalated.

Oil Markets Feel the Strain

The conflict has disrupted key Saudi export routes, pushing more tankers through the Strait of Hormuz at higher risk and cost. While global crude prices have eased slightly, fuel prices in the US have climbed to record highs, adding political pressure ahead of upcoming midterm elections.
