Saudi Arabia Intercepts Drone Attack on Oil Facilities Launched From Iraq

Saudi Arabia’s defense ministry said its air defense systems intercepted and destroyed several drones over the past day that were attempting to strike petroleum facilities in the kingdom’s Eastern Region as well as the capital, Riyadh. A ministry spokesman said the drones were launched by Iran-backed militias operating out of Iraq, pointing to continued cross-border threats tied to regional tensions.

Kingdom Signals It May Respond

The spokesman said Saudi Arabia has the right to defend itself and protect its military and civilian capabilities, adding that the kingdom reserves the right to respond at a time and place of its choosing. The statement leaves open the possibility of further action while emphasizing that no immediate retaliation has been announced.

The attempted strike adds to a series of incidents involving Iran-aligned groups targeting energy infrastructure across the Gulf region, as tensions tied to the broader conflict involving Iran continue to spill into neighboring countries.
