Inside Reza Pahlavi’s Struggling Campaign to Lead a Post-Islamic Republic Iran

Reza Pahlavi, son of Iran’s last shah, has positioned himself as a transitional leader should the Islamic Republic collapse, but his campaign faces mounting setbacks despite an early boost during this year’s US Israel conflict with Iran.

Rejection From Washington

Once celebrated at a major conservative conference in March, Pahlavi has since been sidelined by the Trump administration. Officials have publicly distanced themselves from endorsing him, and a recent US-Iran ceasefire framework made no mention of regime change.

Violence and Internal Divisions

Reuters documented multiple incidents of harassment and violence by Pahlavi supporters across Europe, including physical assaults and online intimidation campaigns. Two supporters also face murder charges in Canada tied to a former Pahlavi ally turned critic. Pahlavi has condemned such violence but faces criticism for not doing more to unify Iran’s fractured opposition.

Wavering Financial Support

Some wealthy Iranian-American donors who contributed millions have grown frustrated, saying Pahlavi hasn’t sufficiently addressed their concerns about opposition unity and supporter conduct.
