Iran And US Agree To Halt Attacks, Resume Talks Tuesday

Iran and the United States agreed Sunday to halt recent hostilities in the Gulf and resume talks over the Strait of Hormuz dispute, a US official said. "Technical talks are slated to continue on all areas of the MOU. Both sides will stand down for now and vessels can move freely," the official said, referring to the June 17 memorandum of understanding meant to reopen the strait. Axios first reported the news, saying talks will resume Tuesday in Qatar.

The agreement follows days of strikes after an Iranian projectile hit a cargo vessel Thursday, with both sides accusing each other of breaking the ceasefire. Iran launched missiles and drones at US sites in Kuwait and Bahrain early Sunday, shortly after Trump warned Iran would “no longer exist” if it didn’t honor the deal.

Strikes Continued Right Up To The Agreement

Kuwait’s army intercepted two ballistic missiles with no damage, while Bahrain reported a residential building damaged in Muharraq, with no casualties, and is pushing for a UN Security Council session. Qatar said one of its nationals died from shrapnel injuries aboard a vessel that went missing Saturday, tied to military operations in the area.

Lebanon Remains A Sticking Point

Israel struck Hezbollah targets in southern Lebanon again Sunday, destroying underground infrastructure, just days after agreeing to a new ceasefire with Lebanon on Friday. Iran says fighting in Lebanon must stop for the broader US-Iran agreement to hold.
