President Trump issued a stark warning to Iran on Sunday, stating the country would either need to reach a deal, face continued economic decline, or see its leadership removed. Despite the harsh rhetoric, Trump indicated openness to meeting Iran’s president, who is expected in New York this week for the United Nations General Assembly.
Iran’s military responded by warning that any new attack would trigger sustained, sweeping retaliation against US bases and interests, adding that Washington’s regional allies would be treated as parties to the conflict. Iranian officials claimed to have information suggesting an attack was being planned, though they provided no further details.
Houthi Attacks Add New Pressure on Saudi Arabia
The warnings come as Yemen’s Houthi movement, backed by Iran, launched missile and drone strikes on Riyadh over the weekend, following recent territorial gains in Yemen’s ongoing civil war. Footage showed heavy smoke rising near Riyadh’s main airport after explosions were heard overnight. The US State Department issued a security alert citing potential for further unpredictable escalation, warning of possible flight disruptions and airspace closures.
Houthi Gains Threaten Key Shipping Routes
Recent territorial advances have placed Houthi forces near a critical strait connecting the Red Sea to Asian shipping routes, raising fears of a second major maritime blockade alongside Iran’s ongoing restriction of the Strait of Hormuz.
Global Energy Markets Under Mounting Strain
With both critical waterways effectively blocked, Gulf oil exports have been almost entirely cut off from global markets, intensifying pressure on oil prices. Meanwhile, a separate US blockade on Iranian ports continues to prevent Iran from exporting its own oil, deepening economic strain within the country.
Despite the mounting costs on all sides, there’s little indication either party is ready to revive a ceasefire agreement that collapsed earlier this year, with Iran insisting it won’t reopen the Strait of Hormuz until its interpretation of that agreement’s terms is met.
