Uncertainty over efforts to end the five month conflict between the United States and Iran grew this week after officials from both sides gave opposing accounts.
The US president claimed discussions were underway and called it a final opportunity for Iran to reach an agreement, saying regional nations had requested the talks. Iran’s foreign ministry spokesperson denied any negotiations were scheduled, stating only technical discussions with Oman regarding strait operations were ongoing.
Attack Near Hormuz Raises Alarms
A commercial vessel reported being struck near the strait, adding pressure to an already tense shipping corridor responsible for roughly a fifth of global oil and gas movement. Vessel traffic through the waterway has slowed considerably compared to previous days.
Markets React to Diplomatic Hopes
Despite the confusion, oil prices dropped and stock markets rose Monday on hopes tensions could ease. The president reiterated that US naval forces maintain full control over the strait, while Iran insists it retains sovereign authority over shipping decisions there — a dispute at the core of the stalled memorandum from earlier this year.
