The Irish government has released its first national strategy addressing money laundering, terrorism financing, and financial crime risks, with specific reforms aimed at cryptocurrency activity. The plan introduces new obligations for crypto-asset service providers, including stronger checks on transfers involving private wallets and stricter due diligence requirements when working with overseas crypto companies.
Aligning With EU Regulatory Standards
The strategy notes that legislation implementing anti-money laundering rules under the European Union’s crypto asset framework is well underway. The plan also addresses how crypto-related funds should be treated as a source of money for gambling activities, aiming to close gaps around how digital assets move through regulated industries.
Part of a Broader Push on Crypto Oversight
This latest strategy builds on Ireland’s earlier work in this area, following a national risk assessment on crypto released in June, the country’s first in seven years. That assessment outlined plans to roll out formal industry standards by the second half of 2027, positioning this new AML strategy as another step toward stronger digital asset oversight nationally.
