Two days of anti-immigration violence in Northern Ireland have been described by UK officials as racist thuggery, following repeated clashes between rioters and police in Belfast. Authorities deployed water cannon for a second night as unrest continued across parts of the city.
The violence began after a knife attack that left a man seriously injured. A Sudanese man has been charged with attempted murder in connection with the incident. Following this, groups of protesters targeted ethnic minorities, with reports of homes and vehicles being set on fire during earlier disturbances.

Police respond as tensions rise in Belfast
UK Northern Ireland minister Hilary Benn said the level of disorder was lower on Wednesday compared to Tuesday, when violence peaked. He noted that some groups attempted to approach a hotel previously used to house asylum seekers, which has been targeted before.
Speaking to Sky News, Benn said the attacks were clearly racist in nature, adding that targeting people based on skin colour could only be described as racist thuggery.
He also highlighted the fear within ethnic minority communities, including reports of people being stopped in cars and questioned about nationality, and nurses facing intimidation while traveling to work.
