Water Crisis Deepens as Death Toll Rises

Roughly 58,000 households in the port city of Yatsushiro remained without water or power as of Thursday, with local officials unable to say how long repairs to damaged water systems might take. The prefectural government confirmed 17 deaths from the earthquake, with most fatalities occurring at a damaged paper mill and following a possible gas explosion at a shopping mall. Including cases still under investigation, the broader death toll linked to the quake has reached 28.

Military Deploys Aid as Heat Risk Grows

With temperatures reaching around 35 degrees Celsius and expected to climb close to 40 degrees over the weekend, officials warned of serious heatstroke risk among residents and rescue workers. Japan’s Self-Defense Force has installed roughly 300 air-conditioning units at evacuation centers and delivered emergency water supplies, though residents have been limited to just a few liters each per day.

Manufacturing Disruptions Add Economic Strain

The Kyushu region has become a major hub for automobile and semiconductor production in recent years. Following the quake, manufacturers including Toyota, Honda, Nissan and Sony halted portions of production, while TSMC evacuated staff and briefly paused operations to assess potential damage, highlighting the earthquake’s broader economic ripple effects.
