A Russian drone struck a train near the Ukraine-Poland border shortly after former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson and several top European security officials had passed through the same area on a different train.
The drone hit the train’s engine at a station close to the border, but all passengers had already been evacuated. Ukrainian officials said the evacuation order was given just minutes before the strike occurred.
Officials Narrowly Avoid Direct Impact
Johnson and other European security advisers were returning from a security conference in Kyiv when the incident occurred. Ukrainian railway officials suggested the diplomatic train may have been the intended target, though Russia stated it struck railway infrastructure rather than a specific train.
Reactions From European Leaders
Johnson condemned the attack as a senseless act against civilian infrastructure, while Ukrainian officials called for stronger sanctions against Russia. Poland’s leadership held emergency discussions, expressing concern over the strike’s proximity to their border.
This incident adds to a series of recent Russian strikes targeting Ukraine’s railway network, which remains a critical transportation system since air travel has been suspended since the start of the war.
