Kim and Putin Exchange Messages Reaffirming North Korea-Russia Ties

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un reaffirmed the strengthening relationship between North Korea and Russia in a message to President Vladimir Putin, as Pyongyang marked the anniversary of its liberation from Japanese colonial rule. Kim’s message came in response to congratulations from Putin recognizing the 81st anniversary of Japan’s surrender in World War Two. Putin noted that the bond between the two nations was forged when Soviet soldiers fought against Japan, adding that cooperation between the countries would continue across all sectors.

Kim expressed hope for the continued growth of ties that he said carried forward a shared history of struggle and long standing friendship between the two nations.

Deepening Military and Diplomatic Cooperation

Relations between Pyongyang and Moscow have grown significantly closer since North Korea began sending troops and weapons to support Russia’s war against Ukraine, marking the country’s most significant involvement in an international conflict since the Korean War in the 1950s.

Adding to the symbolic gestures, the Russian ship Pallada arrived at North Korea’s Wonsan port for a goodwill visit tied to the liberation anniversary, where it was welcomed by North Korean provincial officials and Russian embassy staff.

South Korea Calls for Renewed Dialogue

Separately, South Korean President Lee Jae Myung used Seoul’s own Liberation Day ceremony to call for talks with North Korea aimed at achieving peaceful coexistence. Lee said the two Koreas need safeguards to prevent future conflict and should work toward replacing the current armistice with a formal peace agreement. He urged dialogue to officially end the 1950 to 1953 Korean War, which concluded with a ceasefire but never a formal peace treaty, suggesting the talks could also address ways to limit North Korea’s nuclear program.

North Korea has so far rejected Lee’s proposals and has criticized joint military exercises between the United States and South Korea, describing them as provocative.

Tensions With Japan Add Another Layer

The reaffirmed ties between Kim and Putin come just days after Putin drew criticism from Tokyo following a visit to an island off Hokkaido that is claimed by Japan but was seized by the Soviet Union shortly after Japan’s surrender in 1945.
